Alice Lake \u2013 Sawtooth Wilderness, Idaho<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Alice Lake<\/strong> lies in the southern heart of Sun Valley\u2019s Sawtooth Wilderness<\/strong>, surrounded by serrated granite pinnacles that reflect the range\u2019s iconic name. It\u2019s a premier destination for hikers, anglers, climbers, and ski mountaineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting There<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Drive north from Ketchum on Highway 75<\/strong>, crossing Galena Summit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Turn left at the Pettit Lake<\/strong> sign and continue on Pettit Lake Road<\/strong> to the backpacker\u2019s parking lot<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The marked trail to Alice Lake<\/strong> begins here and is approximately 6 miles<\/strong> one way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Trail Conditions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • The trail is well-marked but includes multiple stream crossings<\/strong>, which can be treacherous from May through early July<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The final crossing is via a bridge just before the lower lakes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • To avoid early-season crossings, hikers can travel off-trail along the southern slopes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Bring wading gear<\/strong> if you plan to stay on the main trail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Mountain bikes<\/strong> are allowed only up to the wilderness boundary<\/strong> at Pettit Lake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Fishing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

      • Stocking History<\/strong>: Alice Lake was first stocked in the 1940s and 1950s<\/strong> with Eastern Brook Trout<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Current Status<\/strong>: No longer stocked, as brook trout now reproduce naturally throughout the drainage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Fishing Highlights<\/strong>:\n

        • Alice Lake<\/strong>: Holds the largest fish; best fishing is early or late evening<\/strong>. Afternoon fishing is often slow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Twin Lakes<\/strong>: Brook trout are abundant<\/strong> and can sometimes be caught throughout the day<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Lower Lakes<\/strong>: Best fishing is in the early morning and evening<\/strong>, though afternoons can also be productive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Effective Flies<\/strong>:<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Subsurface: Woolly worms, streamers, nymphs<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Surface: Mayfly (Adams), Renegade, and midge patterns<\/em> (sizes 20\u201316<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Climbing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

          • El Capitan<\/strong>, Snowyside<\/strong>, and Perfect Peak<\/strong> are all accessible from the Alice Lake basin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • While Snowyside<\/strong> is more commonly climbed from Alturas Lake<\/strong>, an airy ascent from Alice Lake<\/strong> is also possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Wildlife & Scenery<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

            • Waterfalls<\/strong> cascade through the glacial canyon in early season.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Keep an eye on the cliffs\u2014mountain goats<\/strong> are occasionally spotted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n
